"Getting it Right - Keeping Your Business Ahead of the Competition "

Joint LISS & BALI seminar for landscapers and amenity horticulturists (6 March 2008)

Keeping up to date and competitive was the name of the game at a successful event organised for landscapers and amenity horticulturists at Oatridge College on March 6.

The half-day seminar organised by LISS and BALI Scotland (the British Association of Landscape Industries) attracted more than 80 delegates, who listened to the latest updates on negotiating contracts, pesticides and weed control, green waste composting, using wildflower seed mixes to improve biodiversity, and training and skills development. There was even a tree planting demonstration at the interval organised by Bellwood Trees, who kindly donated a large pine specimen for the occasion. Rigby Taylor Ltd, one of the largest suppliers of pesticides, fertilisers and sundries for the amenity sector, also kindly contributed sponsorship towards the buffet lunch provided. It is hoped that if demand exists the Oatridge seminar may become a regular fixture in the landscaping calendar, and it may even be possible to run similar networking events for the sector in other parts of Scotland.

Feedback from those who took part in the seminar has been very positive, suggesting that technical updating and Continuous Professional Development (CPD) is seen as vital by landscapers, designers and others in the amenity industry who want to stay ahead of the competition.

“Investigating the Learning Preferences of Landbased Businesses”

A study conducted by LISS and funded by the
British Educational Communications and Technology Agency (2007-08)

This study seeks the views of employers and sole traders working in the landbased industries on how best Oatridge College can tailor the delivery of its training to meet business needs more effectively. Central to the study was an Online Survey which was completed by over 100 landbased SMEs. The results will be included in the Final Report which is due for completion in May 2008. This will identify if online learning methods have a role to play in Continuous Professional Development for businesses in rural and remote areas, or where employers find it difficult to spare time away from the business. It will also outline the wider learning preferences of businesses, and invite further input from employers on possible solutions designed to help improve access to skills/knowledge updating and business development training.
